Randallstown WalmartThis fall, RIV Construction Group began an exciting new collaboration with Brixmor Property Group (formerly Centro Properties Group US), the second-largest owner of community and neighborhood shopping centers in the United States. Brixmor, which was selected as one of Chain Store Age’s Top Redevelopers for work completed in 2010/11, awarded RIV a $15.7M project to build a Walmart supercenter from the ground up in Randallstown, Maryland.

The successful developer of over 620 properties awarded the contract to RIV based on its experience in completing new building projects for several megastores and other major retailers. When finished, the 162,000 square foot structure will be the largest Walmart building that RIV has constructed to date.

Set on a vacant strip mall site, extensive site development of the 14.2 acre property will include the removal of existing building slabs and footings of previously demolished stores; substantial earthwork including deep dynamic compaction; installation of all utilities, sanitary sewer, and storm systems; complete concrete and paving work; installation of guide rails and fencing; and landscaping that will include retaining walls.

RIV will also install micro-bioretention facilities, a stormwater best management practice that uses soil and plant-based filtration devices to control the volume of and remove pollutants from stormwater runoff. This will provide an efficient, cost-effective and attractive landscaping solution for storm management.

Following Walmart’s new prototype store design to provide a one-stop family shopping center, RIV will construct a full grocery, general merchandise area and garden center under one roof. The store will also include a drive-through pharmacy.

With the expectation of bringing more than 350 new jobs to the Randallstown area, the project will bring revitalization and a boost to the economy of the Baltimore suburb. County officials are hoping the completion of the new Walmart will also attract other businesses to facilitate additional economic growth.

The grand opening of the supercenter is planned for the fall of 2012.
